15th February, 2008: The How’s and Why’s of Tea

Why do you drink tea? Last year the Tea Council of the USA sponsored a contest to answer that question; to learn just how and why you and other Americans enjoy the beverage. The response was terrific! Over 70 video responses were received that focused on health benefits and more.

The submissions were creative, often humorous, and informative. Like the grand prize winning entry which features a young laborer enjoying tea – in a dainty cup and saucer – during a work break. And an honorary mention entry that depicts a news station’s investigative reporting into the subject.

28th January, 2008: Paul McCartney Invites You to Tea

“Would you care to sit with me … For a cup of English tea?” Former Beatle Paul McCartney delivers this musical invitation to a massive online audience in a YouTube music video that has been viewed over 14,000 times.

This is a slightly larger audience than the song enjoyed in 2005 when Sir Paul performed the number to NASA Space Station Discovery crew, some 220 miles above Earth, in the first-ever live station musical wake-up.

The whimsical tune details the delights of a traditional English tea, including the lovely gardens where these social occasions were typically held, the outdoor games and sweet treats. And now, in the midst of winter, there’s no better time to steep your favorite Bigelow tea and find yourself carried away with the magic of this simple song into the enchanted world of an English tea! To sing along, first make a quick stop to MTV for the lyrics.

12th November, 2007: Tea Flicks

Winter’s dropping temperatures means it’s time to warm up to a new movie or an old classic. Time to snuggle up on the sofa with a hot cup of Chai tea, and maybe a tea-themed movie!

Timeless favorites include the 1950s musical Tea for Two starring Doris Day as a wealthy heiress who bets her uncle that she won’t say “yes” to anything for a full weekend. Complications arise as she responds “no” to every question and request asked of her.

For a more recent film, fast forward to 1999 for Tea with Mussolini featuring Cher. In this semi-autobiographical tale, a diverse group of women believe they have been guaranteed safety in a tea reception given by Il Duce. As WWII breaks out, however, they are interned and must join forces to survive.

If you don’t mind subtitles, you might also want to check out the award-winning Japanese film Cha no aji (or The Taste of Tea) which premiered as a selection at the Cannes Film Festival. The movie focuses on the lives of the Haruno family, including daughter Sachiko who seems to be constantly followed by a giant version of herself.

17th October, 2007: The Experts Agree: Tea is good for you

We’ve told you how tea helps combat heart disease and cancer. Now you can hear (and see) for yourselves! In two Brightcove TV videos, trusted experts gave high marks to tea when it comes to good health.

The first clip was filmed for television and features a CBS Health Watch segment. In the video, Harry Smith interviews Michael Wargovichasks, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, asking “Is tea really good for you?” Wargovichasks’ response is good news for those wanting to keep heart disease and cancer at bay.

In our second video, one from Consumer Affairs, Dr. Henry Fishman also gives the green light on tea. While highlighting a Dutch study that shows a correlation between tea consumption and heart attacks, he says there are really many good reasons to drink tea for good health.

So, grab a cup of your Bigelow favorite while you view all the good news about tea!

10th October, 2007: Tea Tunes at You Tube

You Tube is serving up tea these days in the form of music videos. And whether you prefer sentimental songs from the sixties or something a little more recent, there’s a tea tune for you!

Remember the old stand-by, “Tea for Two?” Now you can step back in time with a fun instrumental rendition by jazz artist Nat King Cole. The You Tube video features Nat at the piano in front of a live stage audience with close-ups of some amazing finger slides.

Old melodies not your cup of tea? Fast forward 40-some years to hear “Tea and Sympathy.” This new song by Jars of Clay provides the story line for a poignant cafe tea scene and a happy ending for young love.

So settle back and enjoy with a cup of your own favorite Bigelow tea. There’s nothing better for relaxing moments like these!
