23rd October, 2007: Bigelow Tea’s Annual Community Challenge Celebrates its 20th Year

Racers, Families, and Local Not for Profits benefit from Bgelow Tea’s
Mission to support the community in which they live

Fairfield, CT, October 23, 2007 – Bigelow Tea is proud to announce that it has just hosted its 20th Annual Community Challenge fundraiser with the help of a host of enthusiastic volunteers, sponsors and participants.  The event raised a record $60,000, the entirety of which will be distributed to thirteen local area charities.  More than 1,000 strong took the “challenge” and participated in Kids’ Fun Run, 2-mile walk and 5K race.

The Community Challenge is the brainchild of Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea.  Two decades ago her goal was to reach out to the community in which her company is headquartered with a vision toward raising funds for local charities.  Mission accomplished:  this year’s event raised a sizeable amount of money, 20% more than last year!

As Cindi reflected, “I am inspired to think that what began as 50 runners raising $3,000 twenty years ago now attracts over 1,100 participants and raises $60,000.  We have good family fun each year and are now able to help 13 Fairfield- and Bridgeport-based charities whose untiring efforts enrich the lives of women, children and families.”

The sponsored charities include:  Fairfield Senior Center, Sandcastle Playground, Wakeman Boys & Girls Club, YMCA of Fairfield, Mercy Learning Center, Cardinal Shehan Center, Music and Art Center for Humanity, Center for Women & Families, Janus House, Connecticut Food Bank, Operation Hope, Burroughs Community Center, and Grasmere Eldercare Center.

14th August, 2007: Fairfield-Based Bigelow Tea Welcomes Governor Rell to its New Solar Installation-The State’s Second Largest

Movement from green tea to green power

FAIRFIELD, Conn., August 14, 2007Bigelow Tea (http://bigelowtea.com), the family-run tea company based in Fairfield, Connecticut, welcomed Governor Jodi Rell to the site of their new solar installation as she introduced the most comprehensive energy efficiency bill in Connecticut’s history. Living up to the “Do One Thing” program’s call for conserving energy, Bigelow’s solar installation is the state’s second largest, and it will provide 10% - 20% of the facility’s power demand each year.

This movement toward green energy features 880 solar modules on the building’s roof and was a project of particular importance to Mr. Bigelow, co-chairperson of the Bigelow Tea board, since its inception. The incorporation of alternative energy sources - solar panels - reduces energy costs associated with lighting and running the facility while benefiting the environment. The Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF) helped support this $1.5 million initiative by assisting with funding.

“Bigelow Tea is proud to welcome such a notable alternative energy initiative,” said Cindi Bigelow, co-President. “Just as Governor Rell is calling upon businesses and individuals within the state to do their part, Bigelow Tea feels passionate about taking an active step toward greening Connecticut and helping protect Planet Earth.”

The roof’s solar panels will eliminate approximately five million pounds of carbon dioxide every year, equivalent to planting 33 acres of trees.
