America’s One and Only Tea Garden to Host Annual Harvest Event

Fairfield, CT, May 13, 2009 – What better way to welcome the beginning of the 2009 crop harvest than to have a fabulous celebration at America’s ONLY tea garden! Back by popular demand, the 3rd Annual First Flush FesTEAval will take place in just a few days – on May 16th. Hosted by Bigelow Tea’s very own Charleston Tea Plantation, in collaboration with The Bridge at 105.5, this unique and exciting “island celebration” attracts residents and visitors from Charleston and surrounding areas to the charming Wadmalaw Island – all unable to resist the promise of a fun-filled day complete with live music, local art, mouthwatering cuisine and, of course, plenty of American Classic Tea!

The First Flush FesTEAval, so named because of the tea garden’s “first flush” of new growth harvested in the spring after a winter of rest, joyously celebrates (as local tea aficionados will enthusiastically attest) the production of the most fresh and glorious cup of tea ever!

“We are so delighted that people flock from near and far every year to celebrate a new season of tea at our extraordinary tea garden! Cool New Organic Intro’s From Bigelow Tea And Arizona Beverage

COOL NEW ORGANIC INTRO’S FROM BIGELOW® TEA AND ARIZONA BEVERAGE®

“Drink it in!”

arizona-organic-rtd-group

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (May 13th, 2009) – Bigelow Tea® and AriZona Beverage® are bringing a delicious new line of organic green teas to the RTD marketplace. These new entries build on the strengths of their partnership: Bigelow Tea Company is a leading innovator in the specialty tea industry, and AriZona Beverage Company is a powerhouse in RTD.

Their new offerings in partnership are:

  • Organic Green Tea Acai White Cranberry: Regarded as a miracle fruit by many, the acai berry’s tantalizing tropical flavor blends exquisitely with white cranberry to create a uniquely flavorful green tea.
  • Organic Green Tea Original Green: The pure, clean flavor of perfectly brewed, all natural green tea … light, refreshing and rich in nutritional benefits.
  • Organic Green Tea Lemon Ginger: Delightfully subtle yet tart, its delicate, lemony flavor is balanced with the gentle spice of ginger.
  • Organic Green Tea Mango Lychee: Fantastically fruity! Juicy mango and exotic lychee combine for a unique and delectable taste of refreshment.

Rapidly Expanding Segment

Specialty Green Hot Tea has grown 36% over the past 5 years; with Bigelow being the top selling green tea brand in the country. Bigelow has been a key force in the explosive growth of green tea consumption, with ongoing entries and exciting new flavor blends that keep the category fresh and appealing.

The new RTD line reflects Bigelow’s proven expertise in quality and taste, and marries beautifully with AriZona Beverage’s expertise in packaging and distribution. Both companies share a belief that organic products need to be affordable, so consumers can frequently enjoy the pure, healthy benefits.

In these new, 100% natural, organic green tea products, the healthy benefits include:

  • Rich in antioxidants
  • Loaded with Vitamins: C, B3, B5, B6 and B12
  • No artificial flavors or colors
  • No preservatives

In an age of growing concern about the caloric content of RTD beverages, these new teas are refreshingly light … sweetened with just a touch of organic sugar cane, and only 50 calories per 8 fl.oz. serving.

Natural Fit

Equally committed to quality, Bigelow and AriZona find their partnership is “a natural.” Cindi Bigelow, president of the family-owned company, says that “Working with AriZona is refreshing and fun. Instead of following the standard business model, they run their business according to their own rules…and that means making a delicious product for great value in outstanding packaging. They never release a new product without the owner truly liking it! I think that is unusual in today’s marketplace but it’s exactly what we do at Bigelow. That is our entire focus – to make the best tasting teas at a price people can afford in attractive and protective, packaging.”

Because of this synergy, Cindi adds, “AriZona is delightful to work with. They are the perfect partners for our family company, which has been passionate about creating perfect tea products for more than 60 years!”

Luscious Graphics

The distinctive packaging wraps the bottles in tempting colors and attractive designs. The graphics with a clean fresh eye appeal sure to attract the younger RTD consumer to the Bigelow franchise. The 20-oz bottles will be sold in grocery stores, convenience stores and delicatessens. All bear the USDA/Certified Organic seals.

Sharing a Passion for Bigelow Tea

Joe Torre, Phil Simms and Terry Francona Talk Tea with Cindi Bigelow

Fairfield, CT, March 24, 2009 – It only took a few cups of steaming hot Bigelow tea to bring together three of America’s finest – Joe Torre, Phil Simms and Terry Francona – in a recent video shoot with Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea (www.bigelowtea.com). Cindi talked tea with the sporting icons, who unanimously agreed (tongue in cheek) that Bigelow is the only company to get the Red Sox and Yankees sitting and smiling together at the same table!

NFL legend Phil Simms, former NY Giants quarterback and sportscaster for CBS, confirmed that he drinks at least four cups of Bigelow tea per day while Terry Francona, Manager for the Boston Red Sox, is an enthusiastic fan of Bigelow’s Green Tea with Pomegranate.

For the family and employees of Bigelow, tea is not just a business; it’s a passion. Joe Torre, LA Dodgers Manager and Bigelow loyalist, told Cindi: “As soon as I found out how good green tea was for me, Bigelow was easy to love. Going up to Connecticut, meeting your parents, it was like being in somebody’s home. That means a lot when you’re talking about using a product like Bigelow Tea…they’re the people who basically invented it…if you knew how passionate they were, it helps.”

And that says it all.

Have you tried Bigelow Tea?

Cindi Bigelow of Bigelow Tea hits the streets of New York City

Fairfield, CT, February 13, 2009 – Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea (www.bigelowtea.com) hit the streets of New York City to meet and greet fellow tea aficionados. In the lively video “Who is Drinking Bigelow Tea?,” Cindi embarks on a mission to connect with present and future customers by asking, “Have you heard of Bigelow Tea?”

New Yorkers from all walks of life were delighted to chat with Cindi about their teatime rituals, favorite flavors and even the health benefits of tea. Many said they enjoy Bigelow’s Earl Grey and English Teatime. Tea lovers were also enthused about the antioxidants found in green tea, especially in the tasty Green Tea with Pomegranate.

One woman confided that it was her “nana” who had introduced her to the joy of tea, a connection she shared with Cindi, whose grandmother’s experimentation and love of tea eventually formed into Bigelow Tea the company. When one Bigelow tea customer asked if Cindi enjoyed her work, Cindi responded: “I love it. I love what I do, I love tea and I love who I work with. I have such beautiful employees and for every box of tea I sell, I get to do good things for the community and keep 330 families employed.”

Family loyalty, quality products borne by a passion for tea, giving back to the community, keeping employees happy and employed – this is what Bigelow Tea is all about. No wonder Bigelow Tea is Number One in the Big Apple.

BIGELOW TEA AND VAN HOUTTE FORM COFFEE/TEA ALLIANCE

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (February 9, 2009)– Retail grocers have reason to celebrate! Bigelow® Tea (www.bigelowtea.com) –  the number one specialty tea manufacturer in the United States – has joined forces with Van Houtte, the number one gourmet coffee brand in Canada, to develop the U.S. K-Cup market in a big way.

The partnership began about 8 years ago when Van Houtte provided sales and distribution to help Bigelow Tea penetrate the Québec Food Service market. Following that success, Bigelow and Van Houtte formed an alliance to produce Bigelow Tea K-Cups. In the past four years, Bigelow’s K-Cup business has grown over 45% per year.

Now, Bigelow Tea and Van Houtte are launching a national K-Cup campaign in the currently under-developed U.S. Retail Grocery channel. K-Cups fit the increasingly popular Keurig brewing systems, for an at home café experience. The K-Cup franchise is growing because consumers love the rich, fresh-brewed flavor it delivers with unique single-serve convenience … enhancing the superb flavor profiles of Bigelow Tea and Van Houtte coffee blends.

3 million cups a day… one cup at a time

Van Houtte is one of North America’s leading gourmet coffee companies involved in nearly every aspect of the industry. They select, buy, roast and package their own coffees, serving a total of three million cups daily to retail, office, café and online customers. They are also a world leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of state-of-the-art, single-cup brewing equipment and related products.

Their Keurig brewing systems utilize single-portion K-Cups. Inside each K-Cup is a pure paper filter with the ideal grind and measure of  a Van Houtte gourmet coffee or Bigelow specialty tea. Air-tight seals keep light and moisture out, freshness and aroma in, and deliver a single, perfectly brewed cup every time.

An exciting opportunity

Why the strong K-Cups initiative now? “The K-Cup business is one of the fastest growing segments in the United States,” says Cindi Bigelow, President of the family owned Bigelow Tea company. “It makes sense for Bigelow, the tea category leader, to expand on the opportunities of this popular brewing system. Now American tea drinkers who like instant-brew convenience don’t have to settle for anything less than Bigelow flavor.”

Just how popular are K-Cups? Amazon alone sells over 100 million cups per year. Bigelow and Van Houtte plan to utilize their leadership roles to capitalize on this trend. “We’ve already seen in Canada how well our partnership with Van Houtte works,” says Ms. Bigelow. “Together, we can help U.S. retail grocers capture their share of the K-Cup market.”

Synergy and commitment

The partnership works on several levels. Bigelow is the leading specialty tea brand in the US and Van Houtte is the leading gourmet coffee brand in Canada. Both companies have longstanding relationships with suppliers as well as quality checks and customized procedures in place to ensure flavor consistency cup to cup. And both have strong consumer followings, with a combined 140 years expertise in delivering fine tea and coffee products.

What’s more, “We both bring a real passion to the business,” says Cindi Bigelow. “We’re one-hundred-percent focused on producing great teas and coffees and we both use only the best, top grade ingredients. Flavor quality is our number one priority.”

Flavorful variety

The Bigelow K-Cups include these consumer favorites:

  • English Breakfast
  • Green Tea
  • Earl Grey
  • Cozy Chamomile®
  • Mint Medley®
  • Green Tea with Pomegranate

The Van Houtte offerings include single origin, flavored, fair trade, gourmet and decaffeinated coffees as well as a variety pack. Together, the two brands serve the full spectrum of consumers’ tea and coffee preferences in the K-Cup format.

Packaging is designed to create consumer appeal and win quick brand recognition.

Special stand-alone displays feature the proven top-selling items, making it easy for the grocery channel to order, stock and profit from the new K-Cup program.

Bigelow and Van Houtte offer real selling strength in this explosive growth category. They’ll bring new profits to the retail grocery channel, while bringing rich flavor and convenience to the American home brewing experience

What’s in Your Teabag?

Bigelow Tea Releases New Video

Fairfield, CT, January 20th, 2009 – “Not all teas are created equal,” says Cindi Bigelow, President of Bigelow Tea (www.bigelowtea.com) and host of a new Bigelow Tea video. In this engaging short clip, “How Do You Know You Are Drinking High Quality Tea?,” Bigelow educates us on how to choose a good tea. After watching this video, you will never want to settle for anything less!

As the video explains, it all starts with the package. A poorly wrapped teabag will pick up air, moisture and odors. Bigelow teas are wrapped in airtight foil packages which protect the teabag, leaving its flavor intact. Next, beware of tea dust, a teabag filler with smaller leaves which reduces flavor. Bigelow Tea refuses to use tea dust. Bigelow’s Earl Grey, for example, contains large tea leaves with real oil of Bergamot, producing a fabulous, robust tea.

Next, get the real leaf, not the stems! Many black teas are loaded with tea stems, generating a barky flavor. Bigelow’s English Teatime®, a popular brand, contains hand-picked leaves, no stems, and has a clean, fresh taste.

Finally, Bigelow uses real spice, no shavings and no flavor prills. Constant Comment® combines hand-picked whole leaves with large pieces of orange rind, producing a lovely, complex tea.

Check out this video (http://www.bigelowtea.com/about/bigteav.cfm) and put your new found knowledge to good use by joining Bigelow Tea in celebrating Hot Tea Month!

I am also thrilled to say that because of the wide range of delicious flavors, we’re finding that these teas have broad appeal among all of our customers, not just those who are committed to shopping organic.”

Packaging

Packaging conveys the organic quality of the line through soft green colors and botanical illustrations of each flavor’s natural ingredients. The USDA Organic and QAI seals on the packaging certify that Bigelow Organic Teas were produced by socially responsible farmers who meet the organic industry’s natural, earth friendly standards, free of synthetic pesticides and additives. In keeping with the Bigelow family tradition of superb quality and sustainability, the box, tag, string and filter are 100% biodegradable. In Bigelow Tea’s continuing efforts to reduce the consumption of resources, the foil overwrap, essential to protecting the tea’s delicate flavor, natural antioxidants and wholesome goodness, has been reduced in thickness by 12% without compromising the quality and flavor of the tea. This saves over 55,000 pounds of resources annually.

Organic Category Growth

Organic products have seen a huge surge in popularity in the last few years. The global market for organic products reached a value of $38.6 billion (US dollars) in 2006, with the vast majority of products being consumed in North America and Europe, according to Organic Monitor. From 2005 to 2006, US sales in the organic category grew by over 20%. Sales of organic foods are estimated to rise to $23.8 billion by 2010 according to Nutrition Business Journal.

“We’re committed to policies that sustain a healthy environment, so the organic line is a natural extension of that,” affirms Ms. Bigelow. “I’m proud to say we’ve been a pioneer in sustainable production for decades, long before it became a mainstream trend.”

The Bigelow Tea consumer, she adds “looks to us for an exceptionally balanced and flavorful tea experience. Superb flavor profile has always set our products apart, and once again our new organic line delivers.”
