Bigelow Tea Takes a Look at Tea in Morocco!

At Bigelow Tea, we’re proud of the way we produce our outstanding teas. Not only do we provide over one hundred flavors to choose from, we also know that our tea is healthy and delicious! We look at the Bigelow Tea experience as art…and we’re not the only ones who see tea this way. In the Northern African country of Morocco, tea also plays a very important role in the everyday culture and art of its people.

Morocco is one of the biggest tea importers in the world, its people have enjoyed tea as a vital part of daily life since the 1700s. Green tea in Morocco is also known as mint tea; the brew is prepared with mint leaves and served sweetened with sugar. Seen as a sign of generosity, it is served throughout the day to guests…and please don’t refuse a cup–that would be a sign of discourtesy!

Moroccan culture values its tea traditions, just as Bigelow Tea values and maintains high standards for our tea, our customers and our community. There are some interesting cultural differences as well; in Morocco, traditional tea is prepared in a samovar; once ready, the server holds the very elaborate teapot at least twelve inches above the small, delicate glass used to enjoy the tea. The resulting pour is a continuous stream of the hot tea liquid. Sounds like a pretty exciting cup of tea, if you ask us!

Not to worry; the Moroccan teapot has an elongated and slim curved spout to assist in that special pour method. Although this elegant ceremony is no longer the daily routine as it was years ago, it still takes place at more formal occasions. We raise our cup, and teapot, to fascinating tea traditions all over the world.
