It is hard to believe that up until Sunday, March 8th, no woman had ever won the Academy Award for best director. Well, folks, veteran Director Kathryn Bigelow changed all that, with her film, The Hurt Locker.

The harrowing 2009 film, chronicling the workings of a team of Bomb Disposal Specialists stationed in Iraq, had a strong buzz leading up to this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. It eventually stole the show, winning six awards in all including the highly coveted Best Director Oscar for Kathryn Bigelow, and the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year. And this year, the reward was even sweeter with double the regular number of films nominated in that category.

Kathryn Bigelow has directed seven films; including Point Break, but none that have garnered the critical acclaim of The Hurt Locker. Interestingly, the Director was once married to fellow Best Director nominee, James Cameron. (For 2009’s Avatar.) We’re sure there are big things in store for this talented director, and so Kathryn, from one Bigelow to another, we raise our cups to you!

And in case you missed the broadcast, you can watch her make cinematic history here!
