As the holiday season starts to wind down, and we have fed our families, friends, and neighbors in joyous celebration, what on earth are we supposed to do with all the leftovers? Whatever you do, please, please don’t throw them away! Here are some suggestions, from Bigelow Tea for the environmentally conscious and community-minded folks out there:
Reduce waste and save money by creating new dishes from your leftovers. For example, if you have leftover chicken, cut it into strips and make a stir fry dish. Be creative! Your turkey leftovers can be reincarnated into innovative new recipes. No need to settle for a week’s worth of turkey sandwiches! (Also, don’t forget your dog or cat….turkey breast is good for them, and they’ll love you for the treat!).
Not only can you package, freeze and reuse a variety of leftovers, you can also pay a visit to families in need with nicely wrapped packages of food or go to homeless shelters and share some of your soul food.
The holidays are a magical time. Pass the magic on to the less fortunate, to whom your leftovers will be a feast. Spread the love and sustain your community. Take comfort in knowing that you didn’t needlessly waste food.
