Revitalize the Garden: Mulch your Fall Leaves (Then Back Inside and Warm Up With A Cuppa!)

Is your yard beginning to remind you of those rusty/orange-colored shag rugs from way back in the ‘70’s? Don’t fret. With a little effort, you can say goodbye to all the fallen leaves and do the right thing for your garden at the same time!  It’s called organic recycling.  Simply rake the leaves into a pile (you might have to repeat this part a few times if your kids keep jumping in the leaves) then shred the leaves.  You can use a battery-powered leaf shredder (easiest and fastest option) or go over the leaves with a lawn mower.

Breaking the leaves apart with a shovel is rather labor-intensive and should only be used as a last resort. Once you’ve mulched the leaves, shovel them into one or more large mulch bin(s). Make sure the bins are airtight so that moisture doesn’t seep in – the mulched leaves must remain dry. Come springtime, open up the bins, shovel the mulched leaves into piles throughout the yard, then rake a thin layer over the entire surface of your garden.  You will be rewarded in spades (no pun intended!) with a healthy, revitalized garden!

Gathering and mulching your fall leaves may take a few hours and it does tend to get a little chilly out there in the autumn air…..so, when you’re all done, do go inside and warm yourself up with a nice cup of belly-warming tea – maybe some Bigelow® Cranberry & Ginseng Herb Plus B-Complex tea. You’ve earned it! And the B-Complex supports a healthy memory….so you won’t forget to put all the garden tools back in the garage!

Happy mulching!

I wonder if the leaves would be hard to get through with a push mower (no engine on it.) They’re made so well these days they’re not hard to push around but the leaves are an extra challenge.
