11th June, 2008: Top 10 Reasons to Drink Tea Other than ALL the Feel-Good Ones

Last month, Lynn Grieger of yourtotalhealth, a service provided by NBC and iVillage, reported the top 10 health benefits of drinking tea:

  1. Tea contains antioxidants, which protect your body.
  2. Tea has less caffeine than coffee.  According to the article, coffee has two to three times more caffeine, which can lead to the jitters, headaches and sleeplessness.
  3. Tea may reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.
  4. Tea protects your bones.
  5. Tea gives you healthier teeth and gums.
  6. Tea boosts your immune system.
  7. Tea protects against cancer.
  8. Tea helps you keep hydrated.  It turns out caffeinated beverages like tea really don’t have an adverse effect on hydration and research has shown, they contribute to fluid needs as long as you don’t drink more than 5 or 6 cups at one time.
  9. Tea is calorie-free.
  10. Tea increases your metabolism.

As Ms. Grieger challenges, “see if you’re ready to change your Starbucks order!”

10th June, 2008: Celebrating Iced Tea

“One drinks tea to forget the world’s noise.” ~ Thomas Sterling1, Tea Expert; and on warm summer days, what better way is there to refresh the body and the spirit, than by enjoying a tall, frosty glass of iced tea. The Tea Association of America states that iced tea, or at least a more commercialized version of it, was possibly invented by Richard Blechynden while he was trying to engage the public’s interest in imported teas during the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair; but, it was so hot and humid that people were passing him by in search of colder fare. Not one to be daunted he decided to cool the tea and after several attempts at getting the temperature and taste just right created the beginnings of the beverage we purchase packaged or bottled to enjoy in all of its wonderful variations

Of course tea made fresh in your own kitchen, sweetened to taste and chilled to perfection is a real treat too. To learn more on the subject, visit a previous Bigelow Blog article that discusses the history of iced tea and some of the ways iced tea was served in the home, commercially and for celebrations from the 1800s through to today and, since the month of June is National Iced Tea Month you will want to celebrate too by indulging in this classic summer-time beverage every day.

9th June, 2008: Celebrate National Iced Tea Month with Drew Barrymore

Candid shots of Drew carrying a rather large cup, like the recent ones of her displayed at the blog, Flawed Hollywood and interviews from the past where she is described sipping her ice cold drink while speaking with Actor Hugh Grant and Donna Fredykin of USA today reflect her on-going love of  iced tea. So go and get one for yourself and celebrate National Iced Tea Month with Drew.

And have a cup of tea

But since we can’t

When you have this one

I hope you’ll think of me.

4th June, 2008: Bigelow Tea does “Just One Thing”

I had the pleasure of speaking at the Park City Magnet school 7th grade class about solar.  Their librarian, Barbara, had contacted me about speaking to a class because she was trying to educate the classes on different environmental activities that are going on around them.

Not knowing exactly what a 7th grader would want to know on solar I hit the internet and researched information from the sun shining to AC power.  I did find out some interesting facts like; 1 hour of sun energy on the Earth can meet the world’s energy demand for 1 year, it takes 8 minutes for the sun energy to travel from the sun to the Earth, and Germany uses the most solar power.  The amount of solar energy that is available is amazing but the fact we only use about 1% of it is dis-hearting; lots of opportunity for the future.  The classes asked many good questions and one particularly stumped me; how much energy does it take to produce one box of tea?  So I am now working on getting an answer, gee I thought I was just there to give information not do more homework.

The interest shown by the classes in solar and energy savings gave me great satisfaction of being able to share what our company is doing and to see the interest that is out there.  I did happen to carry a few tea bags as well to the class and they seem to disappear fairly quickly.  The Governor of Connecticut has promoted a campaign of “Just One Thing”.  This message being you can make a huge difference over time with little improvements and whether it was talking to a 7th grade class or recycling that plastic soda bottle our small efforts have a positive impact on our environment.

3rd June, 2008: America’s Crown Jewel: The Charleston Tea Plantation

America’s Heartland, whose crew travels the country in search of stories celebrating our nation’s agriculture, recently featured The Charleston Tea Plantation, the heartland’s only tea plantation. The video tells a story of how the Bigelow family’s investment brought new life to a tea crop that dates back to Colonial times. It tells of the ups and downs of this plantation and portrays the vitality evidenced there today. Whether you are a tea lover or not, you will find this “All American” story heartwarming.

2nd June, 2008: Portman and Johansson Share Tea

This past February we told you just how much Scarlett Johansson enjoys tea – going as far as embracing the English custom of afternoon tea time. Now it turns out that Johansson’s beverage preference is a love she shares with others.

Recently published online photos show Natalie Portman of Star Wars fame joining Johansson in front of the cameras, tea cups in hand. Aside from tea, the two recently shared screen time together during the filming of The Other Boleyn Girl, where they starred as sisters contending for the affection of King Henry VIII.
