14th January, 2008: Whole Lotta…Tea

That’s right.  Led Zeppelin, the band famous for songs like Whole Lotta Love and Stairway to Heaven, is now drinking a whole lotta tea.  Performing together after 19 years, these former party animals requested nothing more than a constant flow of caffeine-free herbal tea and sparkling water backstage.  More than one million people applied in a lottery for 20,000 seats at London’s O2 Arena.  Stars like Kate Moss, Priscilla and Lisa-Marie Presley, Steve Winwood and Marilyn Manson were among those thrilled to have secured seats.  And they were not to be disappointed.  The performance reportedly “lived up to the loftiest of expectations.”  Believe it or not, legendary Led Zeppelin is rockin’ and rollin’ to a whole lotta tea.

9th January, 2008: Everything Tea…William Barclay Hall Knows All

With over forty years experience in every facet of the tea industry, William Barclay Hall knows everything there is to know about tea.  Originally from Canada, Mr. Hall received his formal training in England in the late 1960s:  first with Brooke Bond, LTD, then the largest tea packer in the world and later, with Van Rees, the largest tea trader in the world then and now.  Interestingly, during his training, Mr. Hall would taste up to 800 cups of tea a day.

After mastering tea packaging and tea trading, Mr. Hall then went on to spend a number of years in the US food industry, buying and consulting about tea.  He later became a highly sought after and respected tea broker, traveling extensively throughout the tea growing regions of the world in search of the perfect cup of tea.

Well, he found it – at the Charleston Tea Plantation – America’s only tea garden, located in Charleston, South Carolina.  He purchased the plantation in 1987 and later partnered with Bigelow Tea, which has owned the plantation since 2003.  Everyday Mr. Hall lends his forty year tea intelligence to all aspects of tea production at the Charleston Tea Plantation, ensuring production of the highest quality of tea. Together, William Barclay Hall and Bigelow Tea have transformed the Charleston Tea Plantation from a plantation into a beautiful and educational tourist destination as well.  A “must see” for tea lovers and tourists alike.

The William Barclay Hall/Bigelow Tea duo gives new meaning to “Tea for Two.”

8th January, 2008: Green Tea is Superman When it comes to Brainpower

Green Tea has proven not only to protect brain cells, but also to regenerate them.  A recent study at the Thechnion Institute in Haifa, Israel found that feeding green tea extract to mice with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s protects brain cells from dying, and helps ‘rescue’ already damaged neurons in the brain.  Although numerous studies conducted around the world have shown that drinking green tea may help support the brain as people get older, this study is the first to show how the antioxidant in green tea actually works when it crosses over to the brain.  The polyphenol of green tea extract (EGCG) given to the mice was equivalent to drinking about two to four cups of green tea per day.

Perhaps even Superman should start drinking green tea?  Given all its proven benefits, who knows?  Maybe green tea would combat the effects of kryptonite?

7th January, 2008: Celebrities Choose Chamomile Tea

Singer/songwriter Alanis Morissette has been making music since she was eight years old, becoming most famous for her 1996 hit album, Jagged Little Pill. According to at least one fan site, Morissette is also known to sing the praises of chamomile tea! The herbal tea (made from the flowers of a perennial in the Aster family) is Alanis’ favorite drink, but she also finds that it soothes her throat. At lunch with Jon Pareles of The New York Times, Alanis explained her need for a cup of chamomile tea, by simply noting “I’m a singer on the road.”

Actress Jessica Alba is a chamomile tea fan for slightly different reasons. Jessica keeps the tea bags on hand as a beauty treatment for her eyes. Emily Dougherty notes in her Harper’s Bazaar beauty secrets that Alba “keeps chamomile tea bags in the fridge to rid tired eyes of puffiness on Sunday mornings.’I slap them on after I stay out too late,’” she quotes Alba as saying.

4th January, 2008: A Juicy Story… Citrus Juice Combined with Green Tea Enhances Antioxidant Absorption

New research, published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research, suggests that combining citrus juice or vitamin C with green tea or green tea extract could increase the absorption of antioxidants found in tea by as much as 13 times.  The reason for this is that citrus juice and vitamin C appear to interact with catechins to prevent break down in the intestines.  Among other health benefits, catechins (tea’s antioxidants) are believed to be responsible for reducing the risk of cancer, heart attack and stroke.  According to Mario Ferruzzi, who led the study at Purdue University, catechins are relatively unstable in non-acidic environments, such as the intestines, and less than 20 per cent of the total remains after digestion.  In fact, Ferruzzi found that citrus juice increased absorbable catechins by more than five times and vitamin C by anywhere from six to thirteen times.

So pass the OJ to get a boost…a boost in the health benefits of green tea that is!  Stayed tuned as more research is ongoing…
