4th December, 2007: Sit back and enjoy the Holidays!
Well I don’t know about everyone else, but I have spent the last three weekends (yes three) doing almost nothing but getting ready for the holidays and buying Christmas presents. I think I am really missing the point of this special time of year. It shouldn’t be about putting up garland and lights and buying gift after gift. I know that “intellectually” but I think I don’t know it spiritually. I just want to make sure that all those special people I give gifts to light up with a warm smile. Well that is good but how do I balance the need to delight people and still not get caught up in all the hustle and bustle? I did share a cup of Bigelow vanilla caramel tea over the weekend with a friend, and no joke, that helped (must be all the L-theanine). Any advice is welcome. Until then I better keep the kettle on every day!
Here’s to the holidays, learning how to truly enjoy them with those we love, and still have some time for ourselves!

Cindi my dear,
To destress the holidays simplify them. I’m a history reenactor and we do our holiday in 1860’s tradition with token gifts or hand made items. Last year I made gilded walnuts for the tree and gave these as gifts for friends wrapped in brown paper decorated with 1860’s stickers I printed myself. In the old days, the tree was small, set on a table, and the emphasis was on family and friends…but these days we make too much fuss about the gifts. If our friends don’t light up with a smile when they see us…then it’s not the gifts we need to worry about, is it?

Dear Judy,
That is great advice. I went to a service this weekend and the message was that we should be the Christmas light-it shouldn’t be about putting up the lights and the bows and the gifts. I just loved that…and I carried it with me all weekend. That is the truth, no matter what our faith, no matter what the holiday-we are all the lights that carries good works to those around us. I need to keep reminding myself of that important point, the holidays are about doing good things for people (kindness, love, grace)-that is the best gift we all have to give….
With warmest wishes,
Cindi
