18th October, 2007: Bigelow Tea is a Favorite among Natural Food Stores Thanks to Aaron Lawrence
I’m writing today to personally thank Aaron Lawrence for helping us get Bigelow Tea into the hands of a lot more consumers.
Last month we introduced an incentive program with our natural foods broker, Advantage Sales and Marketing to help kick start our fall tea season; one man in particular has proven to us that he can sell tea. His name is Aaron Lawrence. As a Territory Rep. for natural food broker Advantage Sales and Marketing, Aaron is helping to make Bigelow Tea a favorite with natural food stores across the country like Whole Foods/Wild Oats.
I had the pleasure of meeting Aaron at the Natural Foods Expo last month in Baltimore. We invited Aaron to stop by our booth and had our picture taken together along with Angie Lewis, Business Development Manager, Advantage East. That’s Aaron on the left.
Aaron really enjoys selling. He has a “natural” (no pun intended) way about him. Originally from Westbury, NY and now residing in Lauderdale by the Sea, FL, Aaron got his start in the natural food industry with Wildfire Sales. He made the move to Advantage a year ago because he wanted to work for a larger company to gain more exposure to the natural food industry and we’re glad he did!
As our way of saying thank you, Aaron received a bonus along with a 3 day/2 night trip to our beautiful Bigelow Charleston Tea Gardens in South Carolina.
Congratulations Aaron. Given Bigelow Tea’s links to healthy living, you make a perfect fit. Keep up the great work and have a fun trip!

17th October, 2007: The Experts Agree: Tea is good for you
We’ve told you how tea helps combat heart disease and cancer. Now you can hear (and see) for yourselves! In two Brightcove TV videos, trusted experts gave high marks to tea when it comes to good health.
The first clip was filmed for television and features a CBS Health Watch segment. In the video, Harry Smith interviews Michael Wargovichasks, a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina, asking “Is tea really good for you?” Wargovichasks’ response is good news for those wanting to keep heart disease and cancer at bay.
In our second video, one from Consumer Affairs, Dr. Henry Fishman also gives the green light on tea. While highlighting a Dutch study that shows a correlation between tea consumption and heart attacks, he says there are really many good reasons to drink tea for good health.
So, grab a cup of your Bigelow favorite while you view all the good news about tea!

16th October, 2007: Tinseltown Tea
Hollywood’s historic Wattles Mansion recently set the stage for an elaborate tea party honoring some of this year’s imported Emmy nominees. According to Hello Magazine, the scene was international in scope as a British contingent gathered over tea to fete nominees which included Cat Deeley of So You Think You Can Dance fame. Deeley now resides in L.A. (and sports the golden tan to prove it).
Ashley Jensen, originally from Scotland, also attended the tea. Jenson has become familiar in the U.S. thanks to her role in the popular ABC comedy Ugly Betty.
During the tea party, guests and honorees alike enjoyed Battenburg cake, clotted cream and crustless watercress sandwiches served up on Wedgewood china.

15th October, 2007: Tea May Help Protect Against Skin Cancer
Although summer is behind us, the harmful effects of the sun still remain. In addition to using sunscreen, would you believe drinking tea helps protect you from skin cancer? A recent study published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology found that people who consumed at least one cup of tea daily were significantly less likely to develop the two most common kinds of skin cancer. In fact, the risk was reduced by as much as 20-30%, according to this Dartmouth Medical Study. The researchers did not differentiate between green and black tea. So this fall, when you’re catching rays while on the sidelines of your favorite sport, make sure to lather up with sunscreen and drink some tea, hot or cold, green or black.

12th October, 2007: Russian Tea Tidbit
Russian nomads were known to eat one huge daily meal. For the rest of the day they used a samovar, or self-heater, to make tea. They would sip the tea from glasses through a sugar cube held between the teeth.

10th October, 2007: Tea Tunes at You Tube
You Tube is serving up tea these days in the form of music videos. And whether you prefer sentimental songs from the sixties or something a little more recent, there’s a tea tune for you!
Remember the old stand-by, “Tea for Two?” Now you can step back in time with a fun instrumental rendition by jazz artist Nat King Cole. The You Tube video features Nat at the piano in front of a live stage audience with close-ups of some amazing finger slides.
Old melodies not your cup of tea? Fast forward 40-some years to hear “Tea and Sympathy.” This new song by Jars of Clay provides the story line for a poignant cafe tea scene and a happy ending for young love.
So settle back and enjoy with a cup of your own favorite Bigelow tea. There’s nothing better for relaxing moments like these!

9th October, 2007: A Little Tea Does a Lot of Good
As little as two to four cups of tea per day can promote cardiovascular health. This is just one of the findings from a growing body of evidence that shows how tea promotes good health, as presented during the International Scientific Symposium on Tea & Human Health held recently in Washington D.C.
We’ve already learned how black tea reduces stress and, thereby, eases symptoms of heart disease. But now, new research by Claudio Ferri, M.D. of Italy has provided “additional insights into how tea flavonoids provide support for cardiovascular health” by helping reduce blood cholesterol levels and manage blood pressure.
“The list of health benefits associated with tea consumption continues to grow. And, unlike medications, there are no known medical reasons not to enjoy tea as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle,” said meeting co-chair, Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., director of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston.
Dr. Lenore Arab echoed Blumberg’s sentiments, stating, “The scientific community around the world is making tremendous advancements in better understanding [how] tea may reduce risk for heart disease, certain cancers, type II diabetes, and help maintain neurological function. Researchers are finding out exactly how bioactive compounds in tea exert their positive effects on human health.” And that’s a little good news that all of us can use!

8th October, 2007: More Celebrity Tea Parties
This summer we highlighted a trend toward celebrity tea parties with one hosted by model/actress Denise Richards. That was just the beginning! TMZ (credited with “breaking the biggest stories in entertainment”) has now uncovered plans for a tea party to welcome Posh (the former Spice Girl) and her husband David Beckham (of soccer fame) to Hollywood. According to the TMZ web site “Beverly Hills oily heir, Jason ‘Gummi Bear’ Davis wants to throw a tea party to welcome Posh and Becks to Hollywood … bring on the truckload of scones!”
Not to be outdone, The Globe and Mail, says that a teetotalling Paris Hilton now “puts the tea in party.” According to Globe writer Amy Verner, Ms. Hilton was discovered ordering tea prior to the Toronto International Film Festival. Keep it up, Paris!
And Matthew McConaughey was spotted by People taking his private tea party on the road. Their exclusive photo shows Matthew, iced tea in hand, on his way to a bongo lesson in LA.

5th October, 2007: How Russia Was Introduced to Tea – Part 3
Flash forward 60 years from 1735, when Czarina Elizabeth brought caravans of tea to Russia, to 1796 when Catherine the Great died.
Now over 6000 camel loads of tea per year− that’s 3.5 million pounds − were coming into Russia. The invention of a samovar, or “self-heater” which they used for cooking their single huge daily meal made it easier for Russian nomads to make tea throughout the day.
The luxury loose tea trade afforded by the famous Russian tea caravans grew 10 times larger from 1800- 1850. It went from about 2500 camels in 1817 to 10,000 camels by 1830 and began employing carts as well. The caravan’s tea cost Russians’ several times the price of similar quality tea from England . Many think that is because of the romance and imagery of the Russian caravan and the popularity given it by Romantic writers, such as Balzac.

4th October, 2007: 20th Annual Bigelow Tea Community Challenge
Well the 20th annual Bigelow Tea Community Challenge just finished up this past Sunday and WHAT A BEAUTIFUL DAY! Our largest turnout by far! Over 1000 people were in the three events (Kid’s Fun Run, 2 mile walk and a 5K)-not to mention the 200 plus that came with our participants. The weather was picture perfect-breezy 75 degrees. The day was everything I could have hoped for! I think one of the best parts was just sitting back during the affair and seeing the families roaming around, smiling and just enjoying their experience. By far my most favorite aspect of the Community Challenge was seeing the team that planned this event (that I have worked with during the year) get “their moment in the sun.” This group of people just shined! The race committee had absolute and complete ownership of this event. They spent hours and hours, months and months preparing….then the day came. They were like hardcore soldiers running the different areas- preregistration, registration day of the race, walkers area, kids sign up, food, water stations, etc. etc….and they ran these areas with great aplomb. Yes, that was my favorite part of the race, seeing these marvelous people make this event as truly special as it was and always will be….I can proudly say it is one of the best run community events in Fairfield County, raising over $55,000 for local charities. And it is such a huge success because of the sole dedication of the Bigelow Race Committee….ah yes, it was a beautiful day!
