15th June, 2007: The Yankees are Back!

Do you hear the footsteps? I think the Yankees are coming!

After a nine game winning streak (and with the Red Sox losing last night 6-0 after seven innings), the Yankees will be 7.5 games back in the American League East and 3.5 games back in the Wild Card.

However, as Yogi Berra once said, “it’s not over till it’s over”. Regardless, it’s very exciting baseball and I think the season is really just beginning!

15th June, 2007: Weekend “Subway Series”

Oh what a weekend coming up. The Mets at the Yankees here in New York! It’s a true “Subway Series”! The Yankees seem to be back in a groove and I marvel at Joe Torre’s approach to the game. Willie Randolf seems to have a similar approach but in his own style. So many teams are playing good baseball right now that I think it’s going to be a great season for many.

I’m so excited about it that I think I’m going to bring my glove and ball into Bigelow Tea and have a catch in the hall with anyone who is game!! Just as long as nobody tells Mrs. Bigelow!!

13th June, 2007: A Tea Day

Out making sales calls this week. Yesterday was a great day, I have to remember that if you believe (and I know I do have the best tasting tea around) and you are persistent, you will make people see the light.

I have had some pretty hard core “nos” turn out to be some of my best supporters over time. Just got super news on an account that I have been working on for a year and a half!!! It is great when they become believers in your line as well… Yeap it was a great day.

12th June, 2007: Green Tea with Mango

Green Tea with Mango – a match made in heaven - the most preferred beverage in the world, second to water, tea, flavored with what is reputed to be the most commonly eaten fruit globally, mango.

The mango has been cultivated and enjoyed for millennia.  In addition to containing significant amounts of vitamins A, B and C, it was also thought to have medicinal powers. The Hindu believed mangos were “the food of the gods.” Egyptians applied mango to their skin to protect it from the harsh Egyptian sun.

Now mere mortals can enjoy the extra sweet and exotic fruit flavor of mango in Bigelow Green Tea with Mango along with all the health benefits afforded by green tea.  Among the wide variety of benefits, green tea has been linked to preventing cancer, including breast cancer, reducing heart disease by lowering bad cholesterol, and raising metabolism by increasing fat oxidation.

8th June, 2007: Green Tea May Offer Protection From Bladder Inflammation

Green tea may help protect against bladder inflammation, a new study says.

“We discovered that catechins found in green tea protected both normal and cancerous bladder cells from inflammation when we exposed the cells to hydrogen peroxide,” Dr. Michael B. Chancellor, professor of urology and gynecology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, said in a prepared statement.

“Although further studies are needed, the results indicate herbal supplements from green tea could be a treatment option for various bladder conditions that are caused by injury or inflammation,” he said.

In their laboratory study, Chancellor and his colleagues exposed normal and cancerous bladder cells to two major catechin components of green tea — epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and epicatechin gallate (ECG) — and then exposed the cells to hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide normally damages or kills cells, but EGCG and ECG offered significant protection to the cells. The concentrations of the two kinds of catechins were at levels that can be obtained through normal dietary intake, the researchers said.

The study was to presented May 20, 2007 at the annual meeting of the American Urological Association, in Anaheim, Calif.

5th June, 2007: Investing for the future!

Each year, Bigelow Tea reinvests money into the company to make it run more efficiently and to maintain/improve the operation.  Different divisions evaluate what (and how) they are doing and submit proposals for capital projects they feel are appropriate for the upcoming year.  Since our fiscal year runs July to June we are in the middle of reviewing what capital projects will be approved.

For our new year, the company is reinvesting around $2 million into improvements for the operation.  This is impressive when compared to some companies that are just focusing on making more money today vs. making sure the company and products will be here for the future.

1st June, 2007: A visitor arrives at the Charleston Tea Plantation

Today Bigelow Tea has invited Gail Gastelu, aka Lady Gayle, www.theteahousetimes.com, to be our guest blogger and tell us about her experience visiting the Charleston Tea Plantation.  Take a look and let us know when you can visit!

Having visited Charleston Tea Plantation, I wanted to share my story so others will know how beautiful and how worth the trip it really is.  In May, 2006, I was invited with other members of the press to attend Grand Opening festivities at the Charleston Tea Plantation.  The experience was truly magical.  Under a beautiful white tented area we were treated to refreshments and presentations by the Bigelow family and co-owner, Bill Hall.  The passion and hard work they have put into the operations of this plantation were really felt that day as they shared with us all the details of tea growth and operation of the facility and machinery.

Driving from the Charleston area to Wadmalaw Island, where the Plantation is located, was beautiful in itself.  Winding roads lined with huge trees dripping with Spanish moss created a pathway and pleasant drive.  Upon entering the drive to the Plantation, the excitement began to build immediately.  As soon as you enter, you are surrounded by tea shrubs.  As you drive further up the road you encounter more trees with Spanish moss and more tea – as far as the eye can see.

Once the car is parked you can enter the gift shop which leads to the factory where you may observe the tea processing machinery at work.  Along the tour are video presentations of tea processing and explanations of the equipment being used.  It is very interesting and fun.  At the end of the tour you may sample some iced tea and enjoy the vast selection of Charleston Tea Plantation souvenirs as well as some special South Carolina, low-country specialties.

American Classic Tea, produced at the Plantation, is available all throughout the South at almost every shop, grocery store, and even in the airport gift shops.  It is very good for making iced tea. In fact, my sister-in-law and her family have been drinking it iced for years and love it so much they can’t get enough of it.  So, when I brought them some boxes of tea back from my trip, they were thrilled, but since they make iced tea every day – quickly ran out.  So, my niece says “I’m sure Auntie Gail can help us get more!”  Well, I told them they can order the tea directly from the Bigelow website or the Plantation online and that was great news to them.

For anyone who enjoys drinking tea, attending afternoon tea, or simply loves to travel, this is a unique, very special experience not to be missed.  Go to the Bigelow website www.bigelowtea.com  for more information, hours, and directions.  I, myself, enjoyed it so much that I am leading a Tea Tour, Summer 2007 to include a special time at the Plantation and surrounding Charleston area.
