9th February, 2007: ABC Primetime Challenge: THE FINAL WEIGH IN

In a healthy partnership for healthful living, ABC and Bigelow Tea joined forces this summer. A competition was set to follow two teams testing weight loss moTEAvators. The Bigelow Tea Team was on a quest to become healthy for one’s sake. The Bridgeport Bluefish Corporate Office took on becoming healthy to avoid humiliation. The ABC Primetime Challenge Weight Special, which aired December 20th, followed the story and people who took part in the event.

THE CHALLENGE ENDS with the FINAL WEIGH-IN

With eager anticipation, September 19 finally arrived and many of us found it comforting to reach the end of the challenge. Bridgeport’s Arena at Harbor Yard hosted the final weigh-in segment. As ABC was performing final setup preparations, we each had time to reflect over the course of events that led up to this day.

For the first time since the weight loss challenge began, both teams met face-to-face. Emerging from the ballpark dugouts, team participants met over home plate and shook hands before proceeding up the stadium steps for another interview to relate our weight loss experiences. Then it was time to face the scale one last time – just each of us and the scale.

Once again, ABC recorded everyone’s weight as they stepped up for their final weigh-in. Tom, Christine and Jay tallied the individual weight losses and team points. The moment of truth arrived as one-by-one, the results were announced. Weight losses from both teams ranged from 13 to 31 pounds.

Everyone came close or exceeded the goal! ABC Primetime hightlighted how positive and negative moTEAvations work in team environments and proved the power of TEAM BIGELOW!

The JOURNEY AFTER

Looking beyond the first 15 pounds of weight loss, the team was determined the challenge was not going to end. Although a few have already reached their ultimate weight goal, plans were put in place to successfully maintain their weight. While many others still have a few additional pounds to shed, TEAM Bigelow has geared up once again and established another two-month goal along with ultimate weight goals. As we continue our quest to shed those extra unwanted pounds, the weekly weigh-ins are continuing but we can feel comfortable that the cameras are not lurking around corners!

The ABC Primetime Challenge Weight Loss Special aired on local ABC channels on Wednesday, December 20th, at 10pm, EST. ABC News covered the story. ABC News Primetime also detailed the science at their site.

7th February, 2007: Packaging Bigelow Tea

Did you know that Bigelow currently packages over 60 different flavors of tea?  Those flavors are available in the 20 count English box while many are available in Spanish or French boxes as well.  We also package a 28 count box for restaurants and other food service customers.  Our scheduling department has a heck of a time managing the production to make sure that all the products are available in our warehouse so when an order comes in from our customer we have product to ship.  With that said our short shipments for the last six months has been at 99.5% or higher.  After we fill and ship the customer’s order it still has to travel to their warehouse and then onto the local store, hopefully before the store’s shelf is out of product.  That is a lot of traveling for a box of tea.

6th February, 2007: Antioxidants and Tea!

Tea had the benefits of eating vegetables?

Tea is “a plant-based beverage,” says Jeffrey Blumberg, Ph.D., a Tufts University professor of nutrition. “You put those leaves in water and you heat them up and what you’re doing is extracting these phytonutrients that are very similar to those that you find in fruits and vegetables.

“It doesn’t have some of the vitamins and minerals and the fiber that you find in fruits and vegetables, so it’s not quite equivalent, but if we’re looking at those phytochemicals, then boy, there’s actually a fair amount in tea.” (Caffeine may have benefits, too. )

Pack with Healthful Antioxidents

Tea offers the benefits of antioxidants that work against reactive oxygen molecules. Reactive oxygen molecules such as peroxides and free radicals are products of normal body functions. Oxidants can gradually damage the body’s membranes and genetic material, leading to aging and chronic diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. Who wants that?

Antioxidants work to neutralize oxidants and prevent cell damage. Antioxidants in a healthful diet can hold back the damaging action.

Beta carotene, Vitamin E, and vitamin C are recognized antioxidants. Scientists have recently identified other compounds in plants, called phytochemicals, which also function as antioxidants. These plant compounds have been found in fruits vegetables, and all types of tea: black, green, and oolong. Two types of phytochemicals in tea are known as catechins and flovonols.

Here’s a cup of tea to younger and healthier cells!

5th February, 2007: Spring Training

It won’t be long for pitchers and catchers to report for spring training! Baseball is just around the corner! Joe Torre is making his plans for Yankee spring training in Tampa and wanted to make sure he has plenty of Bigelow Green Tea. I got the request to send Green Tea for Joe and all of his fellow Yankee Green Tea drinkers. It looks like many of the Yankees are following Joe’s lead and drinking Bigelow Green Tea both hot and iced.

2nd February, 2007: Your Story: Lillian’s Story!

I don’t know if you could consider this a story, but I have loved “Constant Comment” tea since I was a youngster, and I always loved the instant tea blends Bigelow used to make long and ever ago.? The Lemon Lift was also a wonderful flavor, superior to many of the flavored teas we have today. Are there any other fans of the old mixes back when?
